Activated carbon is prepared through the thermal solution and activation of carbon-containing raw materials such as wood, coal, and petroleum coke. It is a general term for carbon materials with developed pore structure, large specific surface area, rich surface chemical groups, and strong specific adsorption capacity. The classification and application of activated carbon are detailed below.

Here is the content list:

l Classification of activated carbon

l Application fields of activated carbon

l Principle of activated carbon regeneration

Classification of activated carbon

1. By shape, there are Columnar Activated Carbon, Granular Activated Carbon, Powdered Activated Carbon, Spherical Activated Carbon

2. By material, there are Bamboo Activated Carbon, Coal Activated Carbon, Coconut Shell Activated Carbon, Wood Activated Carbon

Application fields of activated carbon

1. Treatment of oily sewage

The most commonly used oil absorption material is activated carbon, which can adsorb decentralized oil, emulsification, and dissolved oil in wastewater. Due to the limited adsorption capacity of activated carbon for oil, high cost, and difficulty of regeneration, it is usually only used as the last stage of multi-stage treatment of oily wastewater, and the quality concentration of oil in the effluent can be reduced to 0.1~0.2mg/L.

2. Treatment of dye wastewater

Activated carbon can effectively remove the chromaticity and COD of wastewater, and activated carbon has a good decolorization effect on dye wastewater. The decolorization rate of dyestuff wastewater increases with the increase in temperature, while pH does not have much influence on the decolorization effect of dyestuff wastewater.

3. Treatment of mercury-containing wastewater

Activated carbon has the performance of adsorption of mercury and mercury-containing compounds, but the adsorption capacity is limited and it is only suitable for treating wastewater with low mercury content.

4. Treatment of chromium-containing wastewater

Activated carbon has a large number of oxygen-containing groups on its surface, and it has an electrostatic adsorption function, which can effectively adsorb hexavalent chromium in wastewater by chemical adsorption of hexavalent chromium, and activated carbon has stable adsorption performance, high treatment efficiency, and low operation cost, and has certain social and economic benefits.

Principle of activated carbon regeneration

Activated carbon regeneration refers to the process of removing adsorbed substances adsorbed in the micro-pores of activated carbon by physical or chemical methods without destroying its original structure, and restoring its adsorption performance. In the process of adsorption, activated carbon adsorbs both adsorbent and solvent, and reaches adsorption equilibrium after a certain time due to the difference in affinity. Activated carbon regeneration is to destroy this equilibrium relationship, based on the following aspects: ① change the chemical nature of the adsorbent ② extract with a solvent that has a stronger affinity for the adsorbent ③ replace the adsorbent with a substance that has a greater affinity for the activated carbon than the adsorbent, and then desorb the replacement substance, the activated carbon is regenerated ④ change the equilibrium conditions by external heating and increasing the temperature ⑤ lower the solvent ⑤ Regenerate by reducing the concentration of solute in the solvent ⑥ Remove the adsorbent by decomposition or oxidation

Jiangsu PURESTAR Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd., established in 2011, was successfully listed on the new third board on April 14, 2016. The company is China's first coconut shell activated carbon research and development and manufacturing company listed on the New Third Board.
